Captioning is widely recognized as the process of interpreting sound in electronic media and live spoken content and converting it into text. It makes sound more accessible through a visual form. However, captioning is arguably underappreciated as both an art form and a tool equal to other arts and sound technologies.

In this workshop, participants are invited on a journey exploring captioning as an act of sounding or sound-making. How can we use text to convey sound that exists both outside and within our bodyminds? What are the advantages and limitations of using text to deliver sound?

While this workshop will also discuss captioning in a filmmaking practice, it will delve beyond that to explore the possibilities and challenges of describing sound and conveying it in text.

In this workshop, participants will:

– learn how to describe sound and the contexts of sound (description),

– observe the possibilities and challenges in describing sound,

– learn how to use text of sound description in visual media, and

– recognize the dynamic relationships between text, sound, and other sensory experiences, such as visual, tactile, texture, and temperature, among others.
