GIRLBOSS KARAOKE with Fenek Sélavy from 7 pm
Girlbosses, Cool Girls, Bad Girls, and Bitches… What kind of “strong,” gendered characters do we actually encounter on the dance floor and on the radio?
Music can empower us, move us, and physically captivate us. Yet the accompanying lyrics and imagery are often questionable. In this karaoke session, the audience is invited to lean into girl-power guilty pleasures in Western pop music, while also taking a critical look at the stereotypes and capitalist messages associated with them.
Fenia Franz designs participatory spaces, artistic workshops, and interactive performances at the intersection of art and everyday life. Her work in the fields of cultural education and urban practice focuses on environmental issues, non-economic values, gender roles in art and pop culture, and art mediation as care work.
Franz, also known as Fenek Sélavy, uses “Curated Karaoke” to enable a broad audience –regardless of talent or background – to become part of the show themselves. Collective singing is used as an emancipatory, performative game to (re)claim art venues and public spaces.
